Colour Talk: The 60-30-10 Principle

Colour is an essential part of our lives. They are associated with a million things such as emotions, personality and expression. Colours have such a high impact on the human brain. In fact, some of the most influential people in history became popular because of how they use colours to express how they feel through paintings and there is an alternative medicine methodology today called "Colour Therapy" which claims to heal physical illnesses with the proper use of colours.

In the world of interior design, colours also take a big part in making a project successful. Choosing the right colour theme can either make or break a home decoration project. That is why designers must really have a good sense of combining them to be able to create an environment that gives out the right impression. Well, whether you are a professional designer or not, if you want to use colours for your home interior, you might want to do some mix and matching first before implementing the colour scheme.

As a general rule, you can use the 60-30-10 principle when adding colours to your space. It is a simple way for you to know how much colour you want to put inside a room that you want to decorate:

  • 60% dominant colour - the main theme. Human perception have the tendency to see this as the overall theme.
  • 30% secondary colour - catches the attention of the human eye and provides visual interest.
  • 10% accent colour - gives the extra "uhmp", if you know what I mean.

Okay, so maybe that's a bit technical for you. If we would translate the 60-30-10 principle in layman's term, it's more like how a businessman would dress up for his work. 60% of the color of his suit comprises of his slacks and his jacket; 30% of the color is the shirt that he's wearing and the remaining 10% is the color of his tie.

Translating it into how you would use colours in your room is simple. The largest percentage 60% is the colour of your walls (and ceiling), the 30% takes the colour of your upholstery (or furnitures), and the remaining 10% goes to a piece of ornament you want to put in a room (like a flower arrangement or a unique chair you got from your furniture supplier).

There maybe more than a million tips and tricks that you can get from designers or from the internet regarding the use of colours for your home. However, no one can really tell you what colours or shades to use because, after all, it is your home. If you are not confident enough to paint your room with the colours that you think will work, you should probably hire an interior designer who is flexible enough to do what you want and at the same time considers the overall appeal of your space once it is done. Just a friendly reminder from the Rezt&Relax family. =)
